September 30, 430: The death of St. Jerome at the age of, well, somewhere between 75 and 78. Converted from paganism at 19, Jerome spent the last half of his life translating The Holy Bible into Latin. It is known as the Vulgate translation, as the Latin of Jerome’s day was considered a “vulgar” tongue.
