One never thinks that poetry can lead to martyrdom.
It's interesting that when I think back to my youth, much of the counter-cultural arts scene was introduced to me through the basement of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland. In the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, the Episcopal Church really was on the cutting edge of culture, rather than simply believing itself to be.
From the time I was fourteen until I moved away at twenty-five, I would attend numerous musical acts, poetry readings, dramatic works-in-progress, and other fare all in relative comfort in that musty undercroft. It was understood and appreciated that The Episcopal Church in those days was a friend to the edgy artists.
