This article’s title may well appear on my headstone.

It has been a while, certainly before the COVID lockdown, since I have received a job inquiry from outside my current diocese. But the other day I received a very pleasant letter from the Canon to the Ordinary [a bishop’s hitman, usually] in a Florida diocese [there are five Episcopal dioceses in that state] inviting me to interview for the position of rector of one of their smaller parishes.

Of course, small by Florida’s standards means enormous by Connecticut’s.

Then the Canon sent along a photograph of the church. The church had no steeple. In fact, it looked like a sensibly designed building.

Oh, the longing.
