I want to thank everyone who reads these pages. While retirement has been far more interesting than I thought it would be, I miss being a teacher and relaying this eccentric collection of subjects satisfies that need.
Since it’s the annual Surfari time, we’ll be away from the keyboard, electronic screens, and volumes of forgotten lore until Monday, September 9th.
It turns out it’s a little tiring reducing Emersonian or Augustinian theology/philosophy to 1000 or so words yet still make sense. I need to get out of my head for awhile and embrace the physicality necessary to roil with nature at its wildest.
[Besides, I owe Sean Padraic some surfing stories.]
The richest of all lords is Use,
And ruddy Health the loftiest Muse.
Live in the sunshine, swim the sea,
Drink the wild air's salubrity…. from Emerson’s Considerations by the Way
The Vigil, Mystic Monday, a weekly meditation, a profile of an unknown, admirable person, material about stray tenets of Christianity, and other items will all return on the 9th.
On a housekeeping note, roughly 1000+ people read A Wandering Coracle each week with 64 paid subscribers. I would like to remind the readers that for a mere 96 cents a week, one can have access to all past content and any exclusive future material. That’s nearly 600 posts at this point.
It would be nice to lift the number of subscribers closer to 100 so that Substack continues to offer me a platform for this eccentricity.
Perhaps we should have a telethon like PBS.
Also, if you like what you have read, please remember to hit the “like” button above. It looks like a fanciful heart. [If you want to be totally wild, you can hit the “like” button even if you don’t like it.] This helps to keep us online, too.
And now, the musical theme of our annual Surfari:
For fun, here’s a pastiche of Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River” from a couple of years ago:
I’m definitely looking forward to some good stories about some fun waves when you’re back from your aquatic spiritual retreat. South Jersey looks like it’s going to be fun tomorrow morning. Also, next Sunday, September 8 looks really good in New York if you’re driving through and feel like stopping to catch a few. Enjoy.
Enjoy your well earned rest! I am sure that you will find plenty of inspiration and return fully recharged and ready to go! :}
